The Hughes Center Honors recognizes outstanding New Jerseyans for excellence in their field and for a commitment to public service, civility and bipartisanship that reflects the life and career of Ambassador William J. Hughes. Ambassador Hughes served as U.S. ambassador to Panama and as a U.S. congressman for 20 years. The awards program is sponsored by the William J. “The loss of Bill Hughes and all the good he represented should cause us to rededicate ourselves to the values he and his center stand for. I accept this award in that spirit,” says Governor Florio.
