On October 3, 2022, we gathered with family and friends to celebrate the life and legacy of Governor James Florio, the Founder of Florio Perrucci Steinhardt Cappelli Tipton & Taylor. Governor Florio, who passed away on September 25 at age 85, was a friend, mentor, and amazing leader of Florio Perrucci. The celebration took place at the Dennis Flyer Theater on Camden County’s Blackwood Campus.

At the ceremony honoring the life of the Governor, Lou Cappelli thanked members of the Florio family “for sharing Gov. Florio with us all these years. It was his leadership and vision that inspired me and many others in this room to get involved. Each time I see a clean lake or river, each time I go to the Jersey shore free of medical debris and trash, each time I drive through the Pinelands, each time I see a contaminated piece of land being remediated, and every time that I am reminded that New Jersey is a safer place because of our gun laws, I will think of Gov. Florio.” Lou is the managing partner of the firm’s Cherry Hill office and Director of the Camden County Board of Commissioners.

Michael Perrucci, Governor Florio’s longtime friend and co-founder of the firm, recalled, “I always thought he wasn’t the greatest politician; he was the greatest statesman,” acknowledging “the political damage that was done” when Florio raised New Jersey’s income tax, something that cost him reelection, and how Florio cared more about doing right than the political consequences. “I was elected to do the right thing,” Perrucci said Florio told his advisors, who warned against raising taxes.

In addition to family and friends, the celebration was attended by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, who said, “Meeting goals might not have always made him popular, but for Jim, governing wasn’t about doing what was popular; it was about doing what was right for the entire state and for future generations of New Jerseyans to come.” Former New Jersey Governors Tom Kean, Christie Todd Whitman, Jon Corzine, Jim McGreevey, and Chris Christie were also in attendance.
